The Rite of the Measured Moon

A Lunar Egyptian Ritual for Wisdom, Memory, and Divine Calculation
(Dedicated to Thoth, Restorer of the Eye)

Sacred Timing

  • Ideal: Night of the Full Moon
  • Acceptable: Any night of the Waxing Moon
  • Avoid: Waning Moon (associated with loss, forgetting, and dissolution)

Perform after moonrise, when the moon is visible, if possible.

Sacred Implements

Required

  • A bowl of clean water placed where moonlight may touch it
  • White or silver candle / oil lamp
  • Incense (kyphi, frankincense, or myrrh)
  • A smooth stone or small piece of silver (symbol of lunar reckoning)
  • Writing surface and implement

Optional

  • Milk or honey (lunar nourishment)
  • Bread or dates

I. Lunar Purification

Stand beneath moonlight or near a window.

Hold the bowl of water up so it reflects the moon.

Say:

“O Moon who returns whole,
O Eye made complete again,
Let your purity descend into this water.”

Dip fingers and touch:

  • Forehead
  • Throat
  • Heart

Say:

“I am washed in counted light.
I am made clear by the measured night.”

II. Alignment with the Lunar Order

Place the stone or silver piece in your left hand.

Face the moon.

Recite slowly:

*“The Moon is counted.
The days are known.
Nothing is lost to the record.

What was broken is restored.
What was scattered is gathered.
What was forgotten is returned.”*

Breathe deeply seven times, imagining silver light filling your head.

III. Invocation of Thoth as Lunar Lord

Raise the stone toward the moon.

Say:

*“Hail to you, Thoth,
Ibis of the shining night,
Reckoner of the heavens,
He who heals the Eye of Horus.

You who know what was,
You who know what is,
You who know what shall be measured—

Stand with me in this hour.”*

Place the stone beside the candle.

IV. The Opening of the Lunar Mind

Light the candle.

Say:

*“As the Moon reflects the Sun,
So may my mind reflect truth.

Let wisdom grow as the Moon grows.
Let insight be renewed without end.”*

Touch the writing surface once with the fingers of your left hand.

V. Silent Lunar Contemplation

Sit or stand in silence for 9 minutes.

  • Keep eyes half-closed or softly focused on the moon
  • Do not force thought or vision
  • Let the rhythm of breathing match the stillness of the night

This silence was known as “Listening to the Moon”.

VI. Recording the Lunar Gift

When ready, write one thing only:

  • A word
  • A question
  • A symbol

Stop immediately afterward.

Egyptian lunar wisdom was believed to come in fragments, not speeches.

VII. Offering to the Moon and Thoth

Place milk, honey, or bread before the candle.

Say:

*“What the Moon gives, I honor.
What Thoth measures, I respect.

May my memory be strong.
May my judgment be calm.
May my silence be wise.”*

Pour a small libation or gesture downward.

VIII. Closing the Lunar Gate

Extinguish the candle before leaving the space.

Say:

*“The Moon continues her course.
The count is unbroken.

Thoth withdraws, yet remains.
Wisdom abides.”*

After the Rite (Traditional Observance)

For the next three lunar nights:

  • Avoid speaking carelessly
  • Pay attention to dreams
  • Note repeated symbols or thoughts

Lunar wisdom was believed to accumulate, not arrive all at once.

Closing Teaching (Temple Maxim)

“The Sun teaches openly.
The Moon teaches quietly.
He who listens at night remembers by day.”
