Rite of Severance: Breaking a Magical Contract

Intention: This ritual template is designed for practitioners who seek to formally and ritually sever a magical contract—whether written in blood, ink, intention, or ancestral inheritance. Proceed only with clarity, conviction, and a purified heart.

I. Preparation

Materials Needed:

  • The original contract (if it exists)
  • Iron blade or shears
  • Black candle
  • Bowl of salt water (moon water preferred)
  • Incense (wormwood, myrrh, or frankincense)
  • Small dish for burning paper (fireproof)
  • Protective herbs (rosemary, rue, or vervain)
  • Your Book of Shadows or journal

II. Cast the Circle Create sacred space in your usual fashion. Light your incense and black candle. Breathe deeply. Declare aloud:

“Here I stand, between worlds, beneath stars, before spirits. By my breath and my will, I dissolve what once was bound.”

III. Invocation of Severance Hold the contract or symbolic representation in your dominant hand. Pass it through the incense smoke. Say:

“By smoke and shadow, this bond is named. By flame and iron, this bond is shamed. By salt and soul, this bond is broken. Let no word remain unspoken.”

IV. Cutting or Burning the Contract

Option A – Iron Severance:

  • Cut the contract into nine pieces, chanting with each cut:

“I sever the thread that bound my name.”

Option B – Fire Severance:

  • Burn the contract in your fireproof dish. As it turns to ash, say:

“As this paper burns, so fades the pact. As ash is wind-bound, so is my soul unshackled.”

V. Saltwater Purification

  • Drop the cut pieces or ash into the bowl of salt water.
  • Stir counterclockwise three times, saying:

“Salt and water, old and deep, Cleanse the vow I no longer keep.”

VI. Closing Declaration

Stand with your hands over the bowl. Say clearly:

“By the power of name and flame, I reclaim my will, my breath, my name. This contract is ended. The bond is undone. By night and salt, by blade and sun.”

VII. Disposal and Aftercare

  • Dispose of salt water and remains at a crossroads or flowing stream within 24 hours.
  • Cleanse yourself with smoke or a salt bath.
  • Record the ritual in your Book of Shadows.

Optional: Craft a Freedom Sigil to carry forward unbound.

Note: This ritual should be done during a waning moon, preferably on a Saturday, in the hour of Saturn.
